The Academy offers South Indian Classical music – Carnatic Music.
Group and private classes are available for both adults and children ages 4.5 and up.
For children who aspire to be shishyas (students), starting in a group setting is highly recommended. In a group class, students benefit from a sense of community, where they learn collaboration and mutual support. The group dynamic encourages social interaction, helping children build confidence, communication skills, and the ability to work as a team. Additionally, students can learn by observing their peers, gaining inspiration from the variety of styles, abilities, and progress within the class. The energy of a group environment motivates regular participation and fosters growth in a fun, dynamic setting.
Course Curriculum
Practical Classes:
All students begin with practical classes, where the focus is on developing a strong foundation in Carnatic music. These classes cover the essential ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles), ensuring a thorough understanding of music theory, vocal technique, and tonal quality from the start. Students are trained to develop proper voice control, breath support, and musical expression while gaining proficiency in fundamental elements such as sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni (solfege).
Repertory Classes:
Once students have gained mastery over basic ragas and talas, they progress to repertory classes, where they begin to learn compositions in various ragas, including varnams, keertanas, padams, and kritis. These classes allow students to expand their repertoire, developing both solo and group performance techniques. Students also explore improvisational aspects of Carnatic music, such as alapana (melodic improvisation) and kalpana swaras (improvised swaras). This stage prepares students for stage performances, cultivating well-rounded musicianship.
Theory Classes:
The study of Carnatic music theory is integral to a student’s development. Alongside practical lessons, theory classes delve into the structure and intricacies of ragas, talas, shruti (pitch), and laya (rhythm). Special focus is given to understanding the connection between the theoretical aspects and their practical application in performance. Swarajatis, alankaras, and raga-tala theory are explored to deepen the student’s appreciation of music’s mathematical and emotional aspects. Understanding these foundational elements enhances the overall musicality and expression of the student.This holistic approach ensures that each student receives a well-rounded education in Carnatic music, combining practical training, theoretical knowledge, and performance skills to develop both technical excellence and artistic depth.
